Five Reported Dead After Building Collapses in New Delhi

The death toll from a building collapse in New Delhi rose to five, according to Indian media reports, as rescue workers continued searching for people believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

The building stood in the densely built Satya Niketan neighborhood and served as student accommodation. Reports said dozens of people may have been inside when it collapsed in the early afternoon. Police did not give an estimate of how many people might still be missing.

Four bodies were taken from the site, according to a statement from New Delhi’s AIIMS hospital cited by the Press Trust of India. Another person admitted to the hospital later died from their injuries. NDTV reported that nine people had been rescued, with some in critical condition, though there was initially no official confirmation of the number of survivors.

The cause of the collapse remained unknown. PTI, citing police sources, reported that construction work had been underway in the basement. One resident told the agency that the ground “shook” when the building fell. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on X that every effort was being made “to rescue those who are trapped.”
