Five Shot at Virginia State University During Early Morning Incident

Virginia State University was placed on lockdown early Saturday after a shooting incident left five people wounded. The shooting occurred near the university's Quad Annexes, where campus and county police found five individuals with gunshot wounds outside dormitories. The lockdown, which began just before 1:30 a.m., was lifted around 9 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities reported that one victim initially in life-threatening condition has since been upgraded to critical, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The university confirmed the involvement of "multiple suspects" and urged people to avoid the area. A significant law enforcement presence remained on campus as the investigation continued.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office were assisting Chesterfield County Police, who are leading the investigation. Further details were expected later in the day. Virginia State University, a historically Black university located in Ettrick, Virginia, with approximately 5,700 students, was preparing for the start of its academic year, with classes scheduled to begin on Monday.
