Flies found on cakes at China's Holiland bakery; staff call it 'common'

A reporter investigating the Chinese bakery chain Holiland discovered flies on cakes at two separate Nanjing stores. When informed, employees at one location nonchalantly stated that flies are a common occurrence during hot weather. They did not remove the contaminated products and refused to discuss their pest control procedures.

At another Holiland branch, flies were seen inside a display case for egg tarts. After being alerted, staff removed only the affected tart and did not address other pastries in the case, which could also be contaminated. This lack of action raises concerns about food safety standards within the popular chain.

Market regulators in Nanjing have warned that food businesses are legally required to implement measures against flies, rats, and other pests. Failure to meet these standards can result in warnings or fines ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 yuan (approximately $690 to $6,900 USD). Severe violations could lead to a suspension of operations.
