Flight from the flames: Stress also for dog Simba

Simba, a Border Collie, lies listlessly on a cot in a large exhibition hall in Bordeaux, France, her eyes closed. The evacuation due to a massive wildfire encroaching on the area has taken a toll on the five-year-old dog, according to her owner, Karine Soulard. "Animals are very, very sensitive. They feel what their owner feels, and it affects them. Just like for us, it hurts them to come here," Soulard said at the emergency shelter.

Soulard and Simba were supposed to leave their home in Martignas-sur-Jalle, near Bordeaux, days earlier. However, they initially turned back, only to be evacuated by a gendarme shortly before. They ended up in the emergency shelter in Bordeaux, sharing cramped sleeping quarters with hundreds of others.

"I think she is tired because she is not used to seeing so many people and because it is distressing for us," Soulard said of her dog, adding, "I think it is the same for her." Despite the stressful environment, Soulard is grateful to have Simba by her side in the bustling shelter. Numerous other dogs roam between the cots, and other evacuees have brought their cats and rabbits.

A team of veterinarians is on hand to support the animal companions, providing food, leashes, and small enclosures. Soulard received Simba when the dog was very young, and cherishes the love she receives daily. The wildfire situation has forced many residents, including those with beloved pets, to seek refuge in emergency accommodations.
