Flights canceled after Krakatau eruption as police step up airport security

Police at Soekarno-Hatta Airport increased security and monitoring after the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted flights and forced the closure of eight airports.

Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief Wisnu Wardana said officers had increased their readiness to protect safety, security and public services at the airport. Police also helped passengers affected by cancellations by handing out masks, checking their health and providing food and drinks.

We are increasing personnel readiness as a precaution against the impact of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption. Our priority is to ensure that security, safety and services for the public continue to run properly.

“We understand that flight cancellations naturally affect the public,” Wisnu said. “That is why our personnel are present to help, provide services and ensure passengers continue to receive attention while waiting for further information.”

Wisnu urged people to remain calm, follow instructions from officers and obtain flight information from airlines or official channels. He said airport police and relevant stakeholders would continue monitoring, coordinating and preparing for further effects of the eruption on aviation.

Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi had prepared three alternative airports for affected airlines: Kertajati in Majalengka, West Java; Ahmad Yani in Semarang, Central Java; and Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java.
