Flintoff leaves England Lions head coach role

Andrew Flintoff has relinquished his role as head coach of the England Lions, a position he held since September 2024. The former England all-rounder expressed gratitude to England managing director Rob Key for the "trust" placed in him for "one of the most important roles in English cricket."

Flintoff's departure comes as he also takes on the head coaching role for the Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash League. He had initially planned to balance both positions, leaving the Lions' tour of South Africa early to join the Thunder. However, he has now decided to step away from the national setup entirely.

Unfortunately I've made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions.

"Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop," Flintoff stated. He also thanked the coaches and staff for their "passion, tireless work and support." He expressed eagerness to begin with the Thunder and explore future coaching opportunities.

Flintoff's coaching experience includes two seasons with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. Ed Barney, England and Wales Cricket Board men's performance director, commended Flintoff for transforming the Lions' environment and fostering player and coach development. "We wish him the best in the next stage of his coaching career and look forward to a time he returns to the English game," Barney added. Mike Yardy will temporarily take over as head coach for an upcoming match against Pakistan.
