Flooding concerns, tornado threats sweep across Canadian Prairies

A potent weather system is sweeping across the Canadian Prairies, bringing a dual threat of heavy rainfall and tornadoes to Alberta and Saskatchewan. Environment Canada has issued widespread heavy rainfall warnings for parts of Alberta, anticipating between 40 and 70 mm of rain over the weekend. This precipitation, combined with already saturated ground and above-normal rainfall this month, raises concerns about overland flooding, washouts, and potential damage to infrastructure and property. In Edmonton, the persistent rain has already led to the closure of westbound lanes on Yellowhead Trail at 170 Street, with police urging motorists to seek alternate routes. The city is on track to challenge its all-time June precipitation record.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan is under a severe weather alert, with tornado watches and severe thunderstorm watches covering large portions of the province. Conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, strong winds, and heavy rain. A surface trough moving north from Montana is expected to fuel storm development through Saturday afternoon and evening. The agency warns that significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and the natural environment is possible if tornadoes materialize. Slow-moving thunderstorms have also prompted severe thunderstorm warnings in southern Saskatchewan, with alerts for flash flooding and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada advises residents in both provinces to monitor forecasts closely, avoid flooded roadways, and seek immediate shelter if threatening weather approaches. While the severe weather threat in Saskatchewan is expected to diminish by Saturday evening, forecasters indicate that parts of Alberta could continue to experience rain into the following week.
