Florida to distribute nearly 6 million eggs to families across all 67 counties

Florida is set to receive 5.67 million eggs for distribution through food banks and community kitchens across all 67 counties, following a nationwide legal settlement announced by Attorney General James Uthmeier.

The settlement followed a joint investigation led by the U.S. Department of Justice and a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from 17 states. Authorities examined allegations that certain producers manipulated market price indexes, driving up the cost of a basic food item for working families.

The case targeted Cal-Maine Foods, Hickman's Egg Ranch and Versova. Court records state that the companies “conspired to artificially inflate price quotations” between June 2022 and March 2025. The agreement requires the companies to donate 53 million eggs to the states involved and pay a total of $3.3 million.

Florida's share from Cal-Maine Foods amounts to 472,500 dozen eggs, equivalent to 21 truckloads. The producers are covering transportation, storage and distribution, so the program will not cost taxpayers, households or food banks. Florida will also receive $348,490 from the monetary settlement for consumer protection and antitrust enforcement.

Feeding Florida, working with Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, is coordinating deliveries through nine affiliated food banks and more than 2,400 community organizations. Deliveries began in late July 2026 and are continuing into September until supplies run out. Uthmeier said the eggs would provide direct assistance as food prices affect working families.
