Florida to test flying taxis by end of 2026 at new U.S. airfield

Florida is set to become a national leader in advanced air mobility with the establishment of the United States' first dedicated test airfield for flying taxis. Governor Ron DeSantis announced the initiative at the SunTrax facility, which will provide a safe and controlled environment for private companies to evaluate their innovative prototypes.

Active testing of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles is slated to begin before the end of 2026. This development marks a significant step in Florida's program to integrate this new form of transportation. The state has received special designation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to spearhead this national integration project.

The SunTrax Air campus, spanning 212 acres, is equipped with vertiports, hangars, and high-speed charging platforms. The initiative also involves collaboration with local universities to train technicians and pilots, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of these aircraft. The goal is to eventually use these aerial vehicles for passenger and cargo transport, as well as for emergency response, offering a solution to urban traffic congestion.
