Fluminense fires Argentine coach Luis Zubeldía after Libertadores draw

Brazilian club Fluminense has parted ways with Argentine coach Luis Zubeldía after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Independiente Rivadavia in the Copa Libertadores. The result put the team's progression to the quarterfinals at risk, marking a turning point for the coach's tenure.

The club announced Zubeldía's departure, along with that of his coaching staff, via social media. The decision comes after a period of inconsistent performances, including an earlier elimination from the Copa do Brasil by Vasco da Gama in July. Despite support from veteran players like Thiago Silva and Hulk, Zubeldía faced mounting pressure.

Zubeldía's time at Fluminense saw the team reach fourth place in the 2025 Campeonato Brasileiro, securing a Libertadores spot. However, after a strong start to the season, the team has fallen to mid-table, trailing league leaders Palmeiras by 13 points. The draw against Rivadavia, following an eight-game winless streak, proved to be the final straw.
