FM: Chinese ambassador should create understanding, not protect only Chinese interest

Thailand's Foreign Affairs Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, has called on the Chinese ambassador to Bangkok to prioritize promoting mutual understanding over the one-sided protection of Chinese interests.

I think it is the duty of the Chinese ambassador here because there have been many incidents, which may cause movements among Thais. I have told the ambassador that on sensitive matters the ambassador must come out and explain instead of speaking only to protect the Chinese interest.

The minister's remarks came after an incident at Suvarnabhumi International Airport where security guards reportedly mishandled fans of a Chinese artist. The situation escalated when 22 Chinese fans were prevented from boarding a flight to Beijing with their idol due to safety concerns. A Thai security guard's alleged "slant-eye" gesture towards the group further inflamed the situation.

"I think it is the duty of the Chinese ambassador here because there have been many incidents, which may cause movements among Thais," Mr. Sihasak stated. He believes the ambassador must actively explain sensitive matters rather than solely defending Chinese interests. "Understanding must be created," he added, emphasizing that the ambassador's primary role is to foster international relations and goodwill.

Understanding must be created. Staying here, the ambassador’s main duty is to promote international relations and good understanding among people. So, in his statements, the ambassador must consider his duty instead of escalating movements.

Suvarnabhumi Airport management issued an apology for the handling of the fans. They explained that the 22 Chinese travelers were prohibited from boarding because they did not comply with regulations and could have caused disruptions. The minister reiterated that both the Chinese ambassador in Thailand and the Thai ambassador in China have the responsibility to maintain positive relations between the two nations.
