Food Alert in Romania: Two Seed Products Recalled from Penny Stores

Two types of WELLGOOD brand seeds, sold at Penny supermarkets in Romania, are being recalled from the market due to safety concerns. The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) confirmed the withdrawal after detecting levels of hydrocyanic acid that exceed the maximum permissible limits.

The supplier, Encinger SK s.r.o., initiated the recall voluntarily, citing food safety as the primary reason. The affected products are WELLGOOD Flax Seeds (200g) with expiration dates between November 20, 2026, and February 9, 2027, and WELLGOOD Mixed Seeds for Salads (200g) with expiration dates between August 29, 2026, and November 3, 2026. The recall specifically applies to batches with these expiration dates sold at Penny stores.

The supplier ENCINGER SK s.r.o. is withdrawing two types of WELLGOOD seeds from the market because the maximum allowable level of hydrocyanic acid has been exceeded. The existence of a health risk cannot be excluded.

ANSVSA has urged consumers who have purchased these seeds not to consume them. Instead, customers are encouraged to return the products to any Penny store for a full refund, even without a receipt. The authority stated that the products have already been removed from sale.

Hydrocyanic acid can naturally occur in flax seeds, and European legislation sets strict limits for this substance. Exceeding these limits necessitates a product recall as a precautionary measure to protect consumer health. The ANSVSA emphasized that the presence of higher-than-allowed levels of hydrocyanic acid indicates a potential risk to health.

Consumers who have purchased these products are asked not to consume them. The products can be returned to any Penny store, and the value will be refunded without the presentation of the fiscal receipt.
