Football’s New Tactical Layer Runs at 50 Samples a Second

Football's tactical layer is now operating at 50 samples a second. At the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Qatar, an electronic tracking system used 16 optical cameras mounted beneath the stadium roof.

The cameras captured 29 data points for every player 50 times each second. Officials used the live stream to generate real-time offside alerts.

The same positional information also gives analysts a detailed way to examine movement, spacing and where players are located on the pitch.
