Football world 'devastated' by death of English icon Keegan

The football world is mourning the loss of Kevin Keegan, a legendary English player and manager, who died at the age of 75. Keegan had been undergoing treatment for stage four cancer, a diagnosis he revealed in June. His death was confirmed by his former club, Newcastle United, overnight.

Keegan, affectionately known as "King Kev" and "Mighty Mouse," was a pivotal figure in English football for decades. His family and Newcastle United had announced in January that he was receiving cancer treatment. Newcastle United released a statement expressing their devastation, calling him "one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club's history."

During his playing career, Keegan achieved significant success. He began at Scunthorpe United before joining Liverpool in 1971, where he scored 100 goals in 323 appearances over six seasons. His time at Anfield included winning three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups, and the 1977 European Cup. After moving to Hamburg, he was awarded European Footballer of the Year in 1978 and 1979, becoming the only British player to win the Ballon d'Or twice.

As a manager, Keegan revitalized Newcastle United, guiding them into the Premier League and transforming them into an exciting team that narrowly missed out on the 1995-96 Premier League title. His passionate management style and memorable "rant" aimed at rival manager Sir Alex Ferguson became part of football folklore. He also managed England and Manchester City, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
