Footballer Yimvert Berroterán and Valentina Sandoval die after June 24 earthquakes

The devastating earthquakes of June 24 in Venezuela claimed the lives of 18-year-old Vinotinto footballer Yimvert Berroterán and his companion Valentina Sandoval. They were found dead in the rubble of a collapsed building in Los Corales, La Guaira, after being trapped for over 40 hours without professional assistance.

The Venezuelan Football Federation mourned the loss of the young athlete, remembering his pride and commitment to the national team. UCV FC, Berroterán's club, also extended condolences to his family and friends. "We are with you, we hope you find comfort in shared memories and in the affection of those around you," the club stated.

His departure grieves the entire Vinotinto family and leaves an indelible mark on those who shared with him.

Journalist Martín Ramos reported that both Berroterán and Sandoval showed signs of life until the afternoon of June 25. Rescue machinery arrived on June 26, but by then, they had no vital signs. Ramos criticized the authorities' response, calling it "incredible negligence."

Sandoval's mother had pleaded for urgent help on June 25, highlighting that her daughter and Berroterán were trapped without assistance. The Venezuelan national football team and other football organizations had also shared rescue appeals on social media.

Berroterán had a promising career, playing 24 matches for Venezuela's U-15, U-17, and U-20 teams and debuting professionally in July 2025. The earthquakes have caused widespread devastation, with the national death toll reaching 920 and nearly 3,000 injured.
