For Winning Yugoslav Title, He Received Two Tons of Coal and One Meter of Wood

Dragutin Šurbek, widely regarded as one of Croatia's greatest athletes, is being honored on his 80th birthday. Born in Zagreb's working-class Trnje district, Šurbek's journey began with humble beginnings, honing his talent in a local schoolyard before embarking on a career that would see his table tennis prowess recognized globally.

His professional path started at STK Poštar, and by 18, he was representing Yugoslavia. He soon joined the formidable Zagreb club, later known as GSTK Vjesnik, which would become synonymous with European table tennis dominance. Šurbek's career with the national team was exceptionally long, spanning an incredible 37 years, a testament to his enduring skill and dedication.

Šurbek was a central figure in the legendary Vjesnik team, alongside Antun Stipančić and Zlatko Čordaš. This powerhouse squad, under coach Vukušić, created a dynasty, winning the European Champions Cup three times and the Fairs Cup twice. Their most remarkable achievement was an unbroken streak of 122 official matches without a loss between 1971 and 1975, a world record in the sport.

Beyond his club success, Šurbek carved out a unique niche in international play, particularly against the dominant Chinese teams. He remains one of the few non-Chinese players to have a winning record against Chinese opponents, earning respect from the sport's most methodical and analytical competitors. His physical conditioning was also decades ahead of its time, combining speed, power, and mental fortitude.
