Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to Visit Nepal, Meet Families of Missing Koreans and Encourage Rescue Teams

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun will travel to Nepal from the 5th to the 7th to check the search and rescue effort for South Koreans who lost contact after major flooding.

Cho is scheduled to hold talks with Nepal’s foreign minister during the visit. He is expected to ask Nepal for continued cooperation in searching for the missing South Koreans.

He will also meet the government’s joint rapid-response team and the Korea Disaster Relief Team, known as KDRT, which are conducting search and rescue operations in the field. The visit will include an inspection of conditions at the site and an effort to encourage the responders.

Cho also plans to meet the families of the missing people and company representatives staying in Nepal to hear their views and receive updates on the search. Nine South Koreans working at a hydropower plant construction site in Nepal’s Rasuwa region lost contact after major flooding on the 26th of last month. The government dispatched a joint rapid-response team soon after the accident and has been searching with Nepalese authorities. It later expanded the field operation by deploying a 44-member team.
