Forensics unable to determine cause of death in Eldar Dayan case; suspects released from house arrest

Seven suspects have been released from house arrest as police grapple with an inability to determine the cause of Eldar Dayan's death. Forensic experts at the L. Greenberg Institute of Forensic Medicine at Abu Kabir concluded that the condition of Dayan's remains made it impossible to ascertain how he died. This finding presents a significant challenge for investigators, as it prevents them from establishing the necessary evidence to support a murder charge.

While the house arrest restrictions have expired, the investigation into Dayan's death is not closed, nor are the suspects cleared. Initially arrested on suspicion of murder, two friends, Omri Peretz and Maxim Barberman, are now being investigated for attempted murder. Five other individuals are suspected of involvement in a fight that preceded Dayan's disappearance and subsequent death.

At a previous court hearing, police acknowledged that the gathered evidence did not yet support a murder allegation. However, they indicated that pending laboratory findings could potentially strengthen the suspicion of attempted murder against Peretz and Barberman. Their legal representatives have contested these suspicions, arguing that police have not presented substantial evidence linking their clients to Dayan's death or any attempt to kill him.

Dayan's relatives have voiced strong criticism regarding the investigation's handling, suggesting that delays in locating his remains may have compromised crucial evidence. Despite the end of the house arrest, police retain the ability to pursue arrests anew should further evidence surface. The ultimate decision on whether any of the seven suspects will face charges remains pending.
