Forest and Ground Fire in Waldaschaff Extinguished

A significant forest and ground fire in Waldaschaff, Bavaria, has been successfully extinguished, according to the fire department. The operation, which involved approximately 1,000 emergency personnel, concluded late Sunday evening as all identified hotspots and embers were put out. However, the area remains under ongoing surveillance.

The firefighting efforts were particularly challenging due to a combination of intense heat, dry conditions, strong winds, difficult terrain, and embers buried deep within the forest floor. In some instances, excavators were required to expose these deep-seated embers for effective extinguishing. Helicopters were also deployed to aid in the operation.

Fire officials reported that the "massive deployment" of resources was crucial in preventing the flames from reaching adjacent residential areas and a nearby forest kindergarten, which was in immediate danger. Despite the successful containment, seven firefighters and one passerby suffered minor injuries during the extensive operation.

Especially the combination of great heat, dryness, wind, difficult terrain and partly deep-seated embers in the forest floor presented the emergency services with great challenges.
