Forest fire in Soneja (Castellón) forces evacuation of neighboring Azuébar due to 'negative' evolution

A forest fire that began Sunday afternoon in Soneja, Castellón, has escalated, prompting the evacuation of the neighboring town of Azuébar. Firefighters are battling the blaze, which has been described as having a "negative" evolution.

Approximately 50 members of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) with 17 vehicles, alongside a dozen aerial resources, are engaged in extinguishing efforts. The president of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, traveled to the advanced command post in Soneja to monitor the situation. He urged caution due to expected difficult weather conditions in the coming days, which will increase fire risk.

Benjamín Escriche, the mayor of Soneja, confirmed that residents of Azuébar are being relocated to Soneja. He expressed significant concern over the fire's increasing intensity. The fire is affecting forest areas and is situated in the Sierra de Espadán mountain range.

The Generalitat Valenciana has declared Situation 2 of the Special Plan for Forest Fires, a measure invoked when a fire poses a serious threat to the population and non-forest property, requiring immediate protective actions and extraordinary resources. This situation may also escalate to national interest and necessitate the formation of an integrated command post.
