Former Alumnus Becomes Scammer, Betraying Teachers' Trust

A former "golden boy" of the real estate industry in Taiwan, Lai Kuan-chai, has been accused of orchestrating a massive fraud scheme, allegedly swindling over NT$250 million (approximately $7.7 million USD) from investors. The case has deeply affected his former teachers and friends, who are among the victims.

Lai, an alumnus of National Luodong Vocational High School, had previously returned to his alma mater in 2014 and 2015, donating NT$1 million for sports teams and another NT$1.2 million for an outdoor basketball court. At the time, he was presented as a successful businessman who had made his fortune in real estate in Taipei before returning to his hometown to establish his own company. He even graced the cover of a financial magazine, cultivating an image of success.

However, this image crumbled as allegations surfaced that Lai was using investment schemes to illegally raise funds. He disappeared shortly after, and in July 2017, he was apprehended by police. After being transferred for prosecution, he absconded while out on bail, reportedly using the alias "Shen Wen" to continue his fraudulent activities in Pingtung County.

Investigators believe Lai may have already been facing financial difficulties when he made the generous donations to his school, misleading many investors who saw him as a reputable figure. Among the approximately 30 victims are Lai's relatives, friends, and former teachers, some of whom have lost their entire life savings. The betrayal has left a profound scar on his former mentors, who are devastated by the actions of a once-lauded alumnus.
