Former Athlete Questions Sole Blame in Croatia Ski Federation Embezzlement Scandal

Franjo Arapović, a former Croatian basketball star and politician, has voiced skepticism regarding the extent of Vedran Pavlek's alleged involvement in a massive embezzlement scheme. Pavlek, the former secretary-general of the Croatian Ski Federation, faces accusations from the USKOK anti-corruption office of misappropriating over 30 million euros. Arapović, speaking on the program "Sport Nedjeljom," suggested that Pavlek could not have acted alone in orchestrating such a significant financial crime.

"I don't think anyone in the world is smart enough to do something like that alone," Arapović stated, implying that the scale of the alleged fraud points to a broader conspiracy. He believes that a wider network of individuals, who were part of the system for years, must have been involved. Arapović's comments suggest that the focus on Pavlek as the sole perpetrator might be misplaced, and that others who benefited from the situation are now turning against him.

"Those who carried Pavlek's money around town are now his biggest enemies," Arapović remarked, hinting at a betrayal within the alleged network. He recounted a scenario where someone, after not receiving their share of money, reported Pavlek to the police for allegedly transporting funds across the border. This narrative suggests a complex web of complicity and potential retribution within the Croatian Ski Federation, with Arapović calling for a broader investigation into the entire system rather than solely blaming Pavlek.
