Former basketball player Han Ki-bum has opened up about the profound fears he harbored for his two sons, stemming from his own battle with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that has significantly impacted his life. The condition, which affects connective tissues, led Han Ki-bum to undergo two heart surgeries. Tragically, he also lost his father and brother to the same disease, amplifying his anxiety about his sons inheriting the condition.

Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder, meaning there is a 50% chance for each child to inherit the gene mutation from an affected parent. This genetic reality weighed heavily on Han Ki-bum, who expressed deep concern about the potential for his sons to suffer the same fate. The sons underwent medical examinations upon reaching adulthood, a moment Han Ki-bum described as more critical than any other challenges they faced.

Relief washed over Han Ki-bum when the test results confirmed that neither of his sons had inherited Marfan syndrome. "At that time, I couldn't even focus on my sons' borderline autism spectrum disorder. Their lives were more important," he shared, highlighting the immense burden lifted by this news. The family had previously revealed that both sons were diagnosed with borderline autism spectrum disorder, adding another layer of parental concern.

Despite these health challenges, Han Ki-bum and his wife are focused on supporting their sons' aspirations. The elder son is pursuing a dream of becoming a novelist, while the younger son is working as a delivery driver while attending voice acting classes. The couple remains committed to nurturing their children's individual paths and providing unwavering support.
