Qatar's former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who steered the nation from its Bedouin roots to become a significant regional and global force, has died at the age of 74. The Amiri Diwan, Qatar's top government body, announced his death on Sunday.

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until 2013, a period marked by ambitious policies that elevated the small, gas-rich Gulf state's international profile. He is credited with diversifying the economy, making Qatar the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, and establishing it as a global investment powerhouse. His leadership also saw the rise of Al Jazeera, a prominent international news network, and Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In a rare move for a hereditary Gulf Arab ruler, Sheikh Hamad handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in June 2013, aiming to ensure a smooth succession. This followed his own ascent to power in 1995, when he overthrew his father in a bloodless coup.
