Former Hoeilaart Mayor Vic Laureys Dies at 86 After 42-Year Career

Vic Laureys, the former mayor of Hoeilaart, Belgium, has passed away at the age of 86. Laureys was a deeply respected figure in local politics, having led the municipality for over three decades and leaving an indelible mark on the community and the wider region.

Laureys' political career spanned an impressive 42 years, encompassing seven terms in office as mayor of Hoeilaart from 1974 to 2006. His journey in public service began earlier, in 1971, when he was first elected to the municipal council. Throughout his tenure, he navigated significant changes while remaining a steadfast presence in the local administration.

Beyond his mayoral duties, Laureys was also actively involved in provincial politics. He served in the provincial council, first in Brabant and later in Flemish Brabant, from 1981. From 2000 to 2012, he held the significant position of chairman of the provincial council, playing a key role in the governance of the province. He concluded his political career in 2012.

In recognition of his extensive service and dedication, Laureys was awarded the title of honorary mayor by the Flemish government in 2008. He was also honored as a commander in the Order of Leopold. In addition to his political life, Laureys worked as a civil servant, combining his professional experience with his public mandates. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Sint-Clemenskerk in Hoeilaart.
