Former Resident Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Officetel Robbery and Assault

A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for breaking into an officetel he formerly lived in and committing robbery and assault against a female resident. The court found the man guilty of charges including robbery resulting in injury and trespassing.

The incident occurred on May 5th when the accused, identified as A, entered the officetel in Busan. He followed a resident, identified as B (20s, female), into her apartment after she opened the door. A then proceeded to assault her, including strangling her, and stole approximately 300,000 won using her check card.

A's criminal behavior is very bad, and B suffered not only physical injury but also significant psychological distress that causes discomfort in her daily life.

Investigations revealed that A had a history with the building, having lived there previously. In the week leading up to the robbery, he had illegally entered the building seven times, surveying the electrical panels, stairwells, and corridors on various floors. On the day of the crime, he was hiding in a fire escape when he saw B step out to dispose of trash and re-enter her unit, presenting him with the opportunity to commit the offense.

B suffered injuries requiring three weeks of medical treatment and reported significant psychological distress due to the invasion of her home. In its ruling, the court acknowledged the severity of A's actions, noting the physical harm and emotional trauma inflicted upon B. However, the court also considered A's full confession, his apparent financial hardship, and the fact that he reached an amicable settlement with B when determining the sentence.
