Former star Giang Thanh Thong coaches Vietnam Electricity team in workers' football championship

Former football star Giang Thanh Thong has entered the coaching arena for the Southern region qualifiers of the Vietnam Workers' Football Championship 2026, leading the Vietnam Electricity Trade Union team. Thong, born in 1977, is a notable figure, having transitioned from a prominent player to a coach in this event.

Thong enjoyed a successful professional career, playing for Ho Chi Minh City Police alongside legends like Le Huynh Duc. He was known for his technical skills. After leaving Ho Chi Minh City Police, he played for SHB Da Nang and Becamex Binh Duong, concluding his career with a V-League championship in 2008.

First time I've led a team in this tournament. The organization by Tuoi Tre Newspaper, the General Confederation of Labour, and the Vietnam Football Federation is excellent, creating a lively atmosphere for workers to play and stay healthy. This is very good for them to return to production more effectively.

After retiring, Thong worked in youth training at the PVF Youth Training Center before moving into business and youth coaching for the Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation. He recently resigned from the federation to focus on his business, but his passion for football remains.

He now coaches the Vietnam Electricity Trade Union team in the Workers' Football Championship. Despite losing their opening match 1-4 to Long An International Port on June 7, Thong's team remains undeterred. Thong praised the tournament's organization, stating it's a great initiative for workers' health and productivity. He acknowledged the age challenge of his team, with an average age over 40, but noted their good technical skills and adherence to his tactics.

Vietnam Electricity Trade Union has a very high average age, over 40, which is a challenge. Younger players run better. But the players on the team have quite good skills, and they played tightly according to the tactics I set out. They lost due to individual moments. The players are united and play as a cohesive team.
