Former UEFA chief: 'Impossible to trust' FIFA President Infantino

Lars-Christer Olsson, who previously led UEFA, has voiced strong doubts about the trustworthiness of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Olsson, who worked closely with Infantino when the latter headed UEFA's legal department, described witnessing behind-the-scenes power plays. He stated that he only understood Infantino's true nature in hindsight, after realizing he had supported Michel Platini's bid for UEFA presidency while still employed under Lennart Johansson.

According to Olsson, Infantino allegedly offered positions within UEFA to national football associations in exchange for their votes. He cited the Scottish Football Association as an example, which was reportedly promised the general secretary position before Infantino himself took on that role. These alleged actions contributed to Olsson's conclusion that Infantino could not be trusted.

FIFA is scheduled to hold its 77th Congress in Morocco in March 2027, where Infantino's leadership will be up for a vote. Olsson expressed his hope for a new FIFA president and, more importantly, for a fundamental reform of the international football governing body. He advocates for a rotating presidency among the confederations to dismantle corrupt structures and promote an administration based on principles rather than campaign promises.
