Former Victorian premier Jacinta Allan quitting politics

Jacinta Allan, the former Premier of Victoria, has announced her departure from politics. The announcement came on Friday morning during a press conference held in her central Victorian seat of Bendigo East. Allan confirmed she will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming November election, marking the end of a significant political career.

Allan's decision follows her stepping down from the Labor leadership just over two weeks prior, on July 27. She had assumed the role of Premier in September 2023, succeeding Daniel Andrews. Her deputy, Ben Carroll, subsequently took over as Premier after Allan lost the confidence of the majority of her party.

With each day, I lived the values outlined in my first speech to parliament, quality investments in public health and education, a strong union movement, respect for other people and the role of the community in decision making.

Reflecting on her time in public service, Allan stated, "I am proud to say I didn't waste a day." She emphasized that her actions throughout her career have aligned with the values expressed in her first parliamentary speech, including a focus on quality investments in public health and education, support for the union movement, respect for others, and the importance of community involvement in decision-making. She asserted that the fight for decent jobs and wages should be central to the mission of Labor governments.

Ben Carroll, who served as deputy premier under Allan, paid tribute to her contributions. Speaking on ABC regional radio, he acknowledged her 27 years of service to the Bendigo and Victorian communities, stating that she has "transformed Bendigo for the better." He extended his best wishes for her future endeavors.
