Former volunteer defends conditions at Romanian nursing homes under investigation

A former volunteer at nursing homes allegedly managed by Viorel Pașca in Romania's Bihor county has offered a starkly different account from the one emerging from a DIICOT investigation into human trafficking and exploitation charges.

Speaking on Reddit, the volunteer described the conditions at the centers as "very good" and dismissed claims of elderly residents being held captive or abused as "ridiculous." The volunteer suggested that the entire investigation against Pașca is "strictly political," noting that Pașca had been a public figure for years, appearing on television and maintaining close ties with state authorities.

During their time volunteering, which involved both physical labor and financial contributions, the individual stated they observed adequate medical staff, daily medication, and clean beds. They also noted that facilities were designed for people with disabilities, including accessible toilets. The volunteer asserted that the conditions were "much better" than what many residents might have faced otherwise, with many coming from the streets with severe frostbite, amputated limbs, or having been abandoned by their families.

The volunteer also described Pașca as a "practical, extremely practical" person, "jovial, talkative, an excellent discussion partner," who was directly involved in the daily operations. While unable to comment on financial management accusations, the volunteer emphasized that residents received three meals a day, had access to various amenities, and could receive visitors without restriction. Events and outings to cultural activities or church were also organized for the residents.
