Former World Boxing Champion Zolani Tete Shot Dead Outside Home in South Africa

Former two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete, 38, was shot and killed outside his home in Mdantsane, South Africa. The country's Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, announced the tragic news on Friday. South African police confirmed that no arrests have been made. According to a police statement, Tete was in his car, waiting for his gate to open, when two armed suspects wearing balaclavas opened fire. Tete died instantly, while his 27-year-old female passenger was critically wounded and hospitalized. Despite government figures indicating a decrease in murders, South Africa remains one of the world's most violent countries, with an average of 57 homicides per day in the first four months of this year. Tete, a native of Mdantsane, held world titles in two weight classes, including the World Boxing Organization bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019 and the International Boxing Federation super flyweight title in 2014. He had a professional record of 34 fights, with 29 wins.
