Formosa 7-a-side Football Championship kicks off in Kaohsiung with 192 teams

Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is hosting the 2026 Formosa International 7-a-side Football Championship, a significant event that kicked off on August 5 at the Nanzi Football Field. This year's tournament has drawn an impressive 192 teams, including 30 international delegations from Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Spain, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore, alongside local Taiwanese teams.

The championship, now in its third year, is organized by the Kaohsiung City Sports Development Bureau and co-promoted by Powin Health Management. It invites international U8-U16 youth training teams, offering Taiwanese young players valuable opportunities for global exchange and competition. A highlight of the opening ceremony was an exhibition match featuring the U16 youth teams from Spanish La Liga clubs Villarreal CF and Getafe CF, showcasing their solid foundational skills and high-level play.

Kaohsiung City Sports Development Bureau Director Hou Tsung-yao stated that the city welcomes not only football teams but also families and cultural exchanges from around the world during the summer. The five-day event will utilize four venues across Kaohsiung: Nanzi Football Field, Kaohsiung National Stadium, National University of Kaohsiung, and Fengshan Stadium.

To enhance the experience for participants and their families, the city government is distributing 6,800 discount coupons, each worth NT$50, for use in local night markets and commercial districts. This initiative aims to encourage visitors to explore Kaohsiung's culinary delights and vibrant city life, offering a taste of the local warmth and unique urban characteristics.
