Formula One Could Return to Argentina as Early as 2029 or 2030

Argentina's long-awaited return to Formula One could come in 2029 or 2030, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said during a visit to Buenos Aires. He pointed to the enthusiasm surrounding driver Franco Colapinto and state backing for the effort, while saying a 2027 return would be too soon.

Ben Sulayem said the next Formula One seasons already have demanding calendars, leaving no immediate room for another race. Even so, he said Argentina's campaign was moving in the right direction. César Carman, president of the Argentine Automobile Club, highlighted the joint work with the FIA to restore two major competitions that have been absent from the country for years.

Formula One last raced in Argentina in 1998. The World Rally Championship last held an Argentine round in 2019. Both championships are now among the targets of Argentina's motorsport plans for the coming years. MotoGP has already confirmed its return to Buenos Aires at some point between 2027 and 2030.

During his visit, Ben Sulayem toured the Oscar and Juan Gálvez Autodrome, which is undergoing a comprehensive renovation. The project carries an investment of $100 million and is planned to accommodate 150,000 spectators. Work covers the track, garages, access routes, drainage and safety systems, with 150 people reportedly working daily on 32 garages in a new technical complex.

The plans include a two-lane tunnel near the first corner for trucks, equipment and accredited personnel, while the older underground structure will remain available for ambulances, firefighters and emergency services. A drainage network with 18,000 pipes will address longstanding flooding problems. The proposed Formula One layout would measure 4,900 meters and include 15 corners, with estimated top speeds of 340 km/h and a 1 minute 18 second lap.
