Four arrested over Lagos man’s killing weeks before his wedding

Four people have been arrested over the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade on Lagos Island, weeks before he was due to marry. Police said the attack followed an argument after a motorcycle collided with the vehicle carrying Kolade and his spouse.

The incident occurred at about 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, on Freeman Street. According to police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi, Kolade was travelling in a black Lexus Jeep from Ebute Metta toward Lagos Island when a motorcycle allegedly struck the vehicle from behind.

Adebisi said an argument followed. The Jeep then allegedly reversed into the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall. A group of people in the area gathered, and Kolade was allegedly attacked with dangerous weapons. Women in the area rescued his spouse while the assault was taking place.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Basit Kolade was travelling with his spouse from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island in a black Lexus Jeep, with registration number KSF 115 JZ, when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind.

Kolade was taken to Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. Police said the motorcycle rider survived and was receiving treatment. The four suspects were identified as Khalid Rafiq, 20, Gafar Rahim, 21, Ibrahim Azeez, 33, and Samos Momoh, 21.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti for further investigation and legal action. Police said they were working to identify and arrest others allegedly involved. Lagos Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani directed that anyone found responsible should be arrested and prosecuted.

The Command has commenced an investigation into the incident, which is being treated as a homicide case, and the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
