Four military instructors receive national defense education awards

Two instructors from Douliu Home Economics and Commercial Vocational High School are among four military instructors recognized by Taiwan for their work in all-out defense education.

The other recipients are Major Instructor Liang Wei-chen of Lee-Ming Institute of Technology and Major Instructor Chen Yi-ying of the Kaohsiung liaison office of the Education Ministry. The Defense Ministry awarded all four certificates in the individual school education category.

Their work extends beyond campus security. Officials said the instructors have planned disaster-preparedness drills, led honor guards in support of national ceremonies and brought defense education into schools and wider society. They have also published academic papers on national security and defense resilience and prepared their own teaching materials and lesson plans.

Chen Zong-zhi, a section chief in the Education Ministry’s Department of Student Affairs and Special Education, said the awards are organized by the Defense and Education ministries under Article 14 of the All-out Defense Education Act. The program aims to encourage efforts that strengthen public knowledge and awareness of national defense.

The ministry said this year’s public awards ceremony is expected in early September. Under Article 6 of the law, Sept. 3 is designated as All-out Defense Education Day. Officials said the instructors’ practical experience could encourage more educators to take part in defense-related courses, activities and research.

The Outstanding Contribution to All-out Defense Education award is organized by the Defense Ministry and the Education Ministry under Article 14 of the All-out Defense Education Act, with the aim of encouraging all sectors of society to increase knowledge of national defense and awareness of defense.
