Four motorcycle riders killed in three hours as Serbia’s Interior Ministry appeals to parents

Four motorcycle riders died in road crashes within just three hours, Serbia’s Interior Ministry said, issuing a renewed appeal for safer driving and warning parents not to hand motorcycles or mopeds to children who do not meet legal requirements.

The first crash happened at 5:15 p.m. in the Ljig area, where two motorcycles collided head-on. Both riders, aged 31 and 46, died at the scene. A 33-year-old passenger on one of the motorcycles suffered life-threatening injuries.

Twenty minutes later, in the Temerin area, a 17-year-old rider lost control of a motorcycle and struck a concrete roadside pole. The ministry said he was riding without a licence, a protective helmet or other required safety equipment. At 8:15 p.m., a 30-year-old motorcycle rider died in a collision with a car near Sremska Mitrovica.

The Traffic Police Directorate said 48 motorcycle riders and three motorcycle passengers had died in crashes since the beginning of the year. Seven moped riders and two moped passengers had also been killed. During the same period last year, 39 motorcycle riders and one moped rider died, while no motorcycle or moped passengers were killed.

The ministry urged motorcycle and moped riders to hold the correct licence, obey speed limits and wear helmets and other required protective equipment on every trip. It made a special appeal to parents and others who lend motorcycles or mopeds to minors: “We particularly appeal to parents and other people who lend motorcycles and mopeds to minors not to do so if they do not meet the legally prescribed conditions for operating those vehicles.”
