Four railway ties placed on tracks in Romania, train driver averts disaster

Police in Suceava County, Romania, have launched a criminal investigation after a potentially catastrophic incident on the railway. Four wooden ties were discovered deliberately placed on the tracks, creating a serious hazard for passing trains.

The quick thinking and vigilance of a train driver averted disaster. The driver of Regio train 5733, traveling from Suceava to Cacica, spotted the four wooden ties positioned perpendicularly across the tracks at kilometer 14+900. Due to existing speed restrictions on that section of the line, the driver was able to observe the obstruction in time and bring the train to a complete stop without incident.

Having in mind that there are speed restrictions on railway section 513, the locomotive driver was able to notice the ties in time, avoiding collision with them, without endangering the safety of passengers or other persons.

Authorities have opened a criminal case for destruction or false signaling. The Suceava County Police Inspectorate emphasized the grave risks associated with such actions, highlighting the potential for severe railway accidents and casualties. They reminded the public that the law carries severe penalties for such offenses, including prison sentences of two to seven years and the prohibition of exercising certain rights.
