Fourteen children killed in Pakistan when tutoring centre roof collapses

Fourteen children and their teacher perished when the roof of a private tutoring center collapsed in Lahore, Pakistan. Rescue officials confirmed the tragic deaths, with the victims ranging in age from 5 to 16, though most were under nine. The incident has prompted authorities to open an investigation into possible negligence.

Preliminary reports indicate the after-school facility was unregistered and operating within a residential building that had a dilapidated roof. Such centers are common across Pakistan, offering supplementary education outside of regular school hours. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that those found responsible for negligence or legal violations would face strict action.

In response to the tragedy, Punjab authorities have been directed to conduct surveys of unsafe buildings before the upcoming monsoon season. They also plan to implement stricter regulations for unregistered tutoring centers and private educational facilities. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences and called for effective safety measures to prevent similar future tragedies.
