FPÖ Consolidates Lead in Styria, Overtaking ÖVP in Polls

The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has cemented its status as the leading political force in the state of Styria following its electoral victory in late 2024. Polls indicate a continued surge in support for the FPÖ, which has climbed from 34.8% to 43%. This upward trend is attributed partly to the approachable demeanor of State Governor Mario Kunasek, a member of the FPÖ. In stark contrast, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), which was heavily defeated in the state election, has experienced a dramatic decline in popularity. The ÖVP has plummeted from nearly 27% to just 19%, placing it in a tie with the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), which also holds 19% support. This shift in the political landscape, described as an "earthquake" by the Kronen Zeitung, reflects a significant redistribution of voter preference in Styria, with the FPÖ now firmly in control.
