France battles 'fire storm' fears as massive wildfire enters fifth night

In southwestern France, a colossal wildfire continues to rage, entering its fifth night as thousands of firefighters, bolstered by military support and determined local residents, confront the extraordinary blaze. The fire, located about 15 kilometers from Bordeaux, is erratic and poses a significant threat, with fears of a "fire storm" escalating as temperatures are expected to climb.

Residents like Georges Clivaz in Saint-Jean-d’Illac, just 18 km from Bordeaux, are taking desperate measures, spraying water on roads near their homes to slow the fire's advance. "We have no choice," Clivaz told AFP, as the flames draw closer. The village, like 220,000 others in the Gironde region, was evacuated on Friday. This massive evacuation underscores the severity of the situation.

France's Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the overall situation as "exceptional," noting that 115,000 hectares have been consumed by fires nationwide since the beginning of the year. Daily, between 30 and 40 fires are being fought simultaneously, with over 13,000 fire starts recorded in 2026. The current fire in Gironde has already scorched 42,000 hectares since Wednesday, a figure that could rival the devastating 1949 fire which consumed 50,000 hectares in the Landes de Gascogne region.

Prefect Sophie Brocas has warned that the return of evacuated residents is not possible as the fire is not yet contained. Compounding the challenge, Météo-France forecasts a potential heatwave starting Tuesday, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C and drier winds, which could further aggravate the situation. While Bordeaux is not under immediate threat of evacuation, fine particle levels have exceeded alert thresholds in the city and surrounding areas, affecting air quality.
