France equips Rafale jets with laser-guided missiles for anti-drone combat

France is enhancing its Rafale fighter jets with a new capability to combat drones, marking a significant step in adapting air power to modern threats. The French defense procurement agency, DGA, announced the successful integration of 68mm laser-guided missiles onto the Rafale, a move that equips the aircraft with a cost-effective anti-drone weapon system.

This development aligns France with international efforts by countries like the United States and the United Kingdom to counter the proliferation of inexpensive drones. The integration reflects a broader shift in aerial warfare strategy, where air forces increasingly recognize the need for diverse and affordable interception methods beyond relying solely on expensive missiles.

The program, officially designated Lutte anti-drone sur avion de combat (LADAC), or combat aircraft anti-drone capability, involved extensive testing starting in February. The DGA collaborated with the French Air and Space Force's Center for Military Aviation Expertise (CEAM), along with industry partners Dassault Aviation and Thales, to achieve this integration.

The successful tests demonstrate France's commitment to maintaining a technological edge in air combat and adapting its existing platforms to new challenges. The ability to effectively neutralize drone threats using modified Rafale jets offers a crucial, budget-conscious solution for air defense.
