France heatwave linked to 1,000 excess deaths, authorities report

France is grappling with the deadly impact of an extreme heatwave, as health authorities announced an estimated 1,000 additional deaths since June 24. The figures, which are still preliminary, reveal the significant toll the intense heat is taking across the country.

The majority of those who died, 85%, were over the age of 65, highlighting the vulnerability of the elderly population to extreme temperatures. The data also indicated a stark 40% increase in deaths occurring within people's homes, suggesting that many succumbed to the heat without immediate medical intervention.

Since June 24, around 1,000 additional deaths have been observed – figures not consolidated – compared to deaths recorded in previous months.

The impact of the heatwave is not evenly distributed, with the most pronounced increases in fatalities observed in regions that have been under red alert for extreme heat. These include the Île-de-France region, home to Paris, as well as Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Normandy, and Pays de la Loire. The report from Santé publique France underscores the urgent need for heat mitigation strategies and support for vulnerable populations during such extreme weather events.
