France holds state funeral for ex-first lady Jacques Chirac

France is preparing to bid farewell to Bernadette Chirac, the widow of former President Jacques Chirac, with a state funeral to be held Friday at the Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris. Chirac passed away on June 5 at the age of 93.

During her 12 years as first lady, Bernadette Chirac was a constant presence by her husband's side. However, she also cultivated her own political career, serving as an elected councilor for the Correze department for many years and holding a position on the municipal council of Sarran. Her political path was more discreet than her husband's prominent role.

The funeral is expected to draw a significant number of prominent figures from both the political and entertainment spheres. Current French First Lady Brigitte Macron is scheduled to attend, alongside former presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande. Sarkozy's wife, model and singer Carla Bruni, is also expected. The French government will be represented by Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin.

The Sainte-Clotilde Basilica holds particular significance for the Chirac family. The couple were married in the nearby Sainte-Clotilde Chapel, and it was also the site of the funeral for their eldest daughter, Laurence, in 2016. The basilica, with a seating capacity of 650, will have a section open to the public, and the service will be broadcast outside for those gathered.

Following the Paris service, Correze will hold its own tribute on Sunday, with local councilors carrying her coffin. Bernadette Chirac will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris.
