France Wildfire: Residents Accuse Officials of Sacrificing Homes for Luxury Villas

Residents of L'Étang-la-Ville, west of Bordeaux, are accusing French authorities of negligence, alleging that their homes were sacrificed to protect the luxurious villas of the exclusive Cap Ferret peninsula during a devastating wildfire. This fire, the largest in France since 1949, ravaged over 42,000 hectares, with approximately 240 houses destroyed, 183 of them in L'Étang-la-Ville alone.

The destruction in L'Étang-la-Ville, which saw about 12% of its buildings lost, fueled intense anger among residents. During a visit by Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas, one resident confronted her, accusing officials of abandoning them. Brocas urged for patience, stating it was "not the time to look for culprits," but many locals believe the distribution of firefighting resources speaks for itself.

"I know Cap Ferret is a prestigious resort, but this was a political decision," said Cécile Boudou, whose elderly parents had to flee through forest roads in the middle of the night. Pierre Alexandre, who coordinated volunteers in a nearby village, echoed this sentiment, claiming their region received insufficient firefighters and vehicles, effectively being "sacrificed" to protect the wealthy peninsula.

Authorities have rejected these accusations, attributing the fire's behavior to unpredictable shifts in direction caused by extreme weather conditions, making accurate predictions nearly impossible. L'Étang-la-Ville Mayor Martial Zaninetti called for patience, stating that answers would only emerge after an official investigation. However, many residents feel abandoned, with one stating, "Everything burned here, while at Cap Ferret it wasn't even close. Everyone went to protect that peninsula, and we were left alone."

Despite the lack of blame directed at the firefighters themselves, many residents and volunteers expressed that the crews were exhausted due to a shortage of personnel and equipment. One poignant account described finding a firefighter asleep in a ditch from sheer exhaustion after days of battling the blaze. The solidarity among the people, however, was evident as locals prepared meals for the firefighters and rescuers.
