Franco Colapinto spins out in qualifying, to start 19th at British GP

Silverstone witnessed a dramatic turn of events during qualifying for the British Grand Prix, with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli claiming victory in the morning sprint race after a duel with Lewis Hamilton. Later, Antonelli secured pole position, edging out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, while Hamilton qualified third.

The afternoon session brought significant drama for Alpine driver Franco Colapinto. With less than a minute remaining in Q1, strong winds and changing gusts made conditions challenging. Colapinto, following his teammate Pierre Gasly, entered the high-speed Maggotts and Becketts complex. Despite setting a strong pace in the initial sectors, his Alpine suddenly lost grip, initiating an uncontrolled spin that sent him off track and into the grass.

Visibly shaken, Colapinto reported over the radio, "I lost it suddenly. I lost the rear axle completely." Fortunately, he avoided a collision with the barriers. The incident relegated him to 19th place, a stark contrast to his promising performance in the sprint race. Gasly, meanwhile, advanced to Q2 and ultimately qualified 12th, though a penalty for impeding Lance Stroll will see him start 15th.

This marks the first time this season that the Argentine driver has failed to advance beyond the initial qualifying stage. Despite starting from the penultimate row, Colapinto's pace suggests he has a strong chance of overtaking several drivers, including Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon, and Alex Albon, during the main race.
