Frankfurt Court: Murder from the 22nd Floor? Prosecutor Demands Life Imprisonment

In a Frankfurt court, a prosecutor has called for a life sentence for a man accused of murdering his wife by allegedly pushing her from the 22nd-floor balcony of a hotel room.

The prosecution contends that the killing meets the criteria for murder, citing "Heimtücke" (malice aforethought) and "niedere Beweggründe" (base motives), arguing the man killed his wife to be with his lover. The lawyer representing the children and the deceased woman's mother supported this motion, adding the motive of "Habgier" (greed), as the accused also sought life insurance payouts.

The defense lawyer, however, argued for acquittal, stating that too many questions remain unanswered. The 60-year-old defendant, who is German-British, has chosen not to speak about the allegations during the nearly four-month trial.

It was murder. The murder characteristics of malice aforethought and base motives are present, said the prosecutor in the Frankfurt Regional Court. She requested a life sentence.

According to the prosecution's case, the man conceived the idea to kill his 40-year-old wife in April 2023. He allegedly researched methods online, including steep hiking trails and poisonous herbs, before deciding to stage a fall. He booked a hotel room on the 22nd floor for a holiday weekend in May 2023. Prosecutors claim he pushed his wife, who was intoxicated and 1.60 meters tall, over the 1.14-meter high balcony railing. She fell 61 meters and died instantly.

After her death, the man reportedly began a new life with his girlfriend. He not only claimed his wife's life insurance and a monthly widow's pension but also allegedly raised over 10,000 euros through a GoFundMe campaign. The verdict is expected on Friday. The accused was arrested in April 2025.
