Fraser officially enters Carlton coaching race after mid-year turnaround

Josh Fraser has formally put his name forward for the Carlton Football Club's senior coaching position, presenting his case to the club's hierarchy this week. This move comes after an extraordinary turnaround since he took over as interim coach in May, following Michael Voss's departure.

Fraser guided the Blues to an impressive 10 wins from their last 12 matches, transforming a season that began with a 1-8 record into one where Carlton is now on the cusp of an unlikely finals appearance. Despite this remarkable on-field success, Fraser still underwent the formal coaching selection process.

Initially, Fraser had expressed no interest in the permanent role beyond the current season. However, the dramatic shift in the team's fortunes and the enthusiastic support from fans have prompted him to reconsider. He acknowledged his ambition to be a senior coach and stated that his interim tenure provided valuable experience and solidified his coaching philosophy.

A fortnight ago, the club came to me and asked me to be a part of this coaching process. Then this week, I was in a position to go back to the club and accept that offer to go through the process. I presented to the coaching panel this week.

"I have said, previously, that I've been ambitious to be a senior coach," Fraser said. "I've been fortunate to be able to sit in the chair and consolidate some of my thinking; get some opportunity exposure to the role that otherwise you wouldn't normally get."

Fraser expressed confidence in his readiness for the responsibility, noting the excitement surrounding the current Carlton group. The team's resurgence has been one of the most remarkable in-season turnarounds in AFL history. Fans have been vocal in their support, chanting "we want Fraser" during recent matches. If Carlton defeats the Western Bulldogs this Sunday, they will secure a spot in the top 10, potentially qualifying for the wildcard round.
