Freediver narrowly misses German depth record after blackout near surface

Freediver Minja Marinković narrowly missed setting a new German depth record in a lake, reaching a remarkable 85 meters before experiencing a blackout just meters from the surface. The attempt took place at the Allmannshausen steep wall, a challenging site known for its cold and dark conditions.

Marinković, a 29-year-old who is considered among the world's top freedivers, was aiming to be the first in Germany to reach such a depth in a lake. The current German record stands at 80 meters, set in 2011. Despite the setback, Marinković, who is also pursuing a doctorate in engineering, remained composed, stating that failure is part of the sport and that he intends to try again.

The dive, conducted in Free Immersion discipline without fins, involved pulling oneself down a rope to approximately 30 meters, followed by a free fall into the abyss. The extreme conditions, including water temperatures of four degrees Celsius at depth and immense pressure, pose significant risks. Blackouts due to oxygen deprivation are the primary danger, necessitating strict safety protocols during competitions.

Marinković cited factors such as sleep deprivation and technical delays for his performance, but expressed gratitude for the support from his team, family, and friends who followed the attempt live. His sister, Anja, conveyed pride and confidence in his abilities, emphasizing that safety measures were in place. The previous record attempt at the same location in 2018 by Jens Stötzner also resulted in a blackout upon surfacing, invalidating his 81-meter dive.
