Frei Calls Cabinet Reshuffle Problems 'Bad Luck'

Thorsten Frei, who is set to become the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, described the challenges Chancellor Friedrich Merz faced in reshuffling his government as "bad luck." Frei stated that even in top-level politics, misfortune can occur.

During an event hosted by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Stuttgart, Frei was questioned about the prolonged process of filling the transport ministry position. He explained that a planned announcement by Merz at the Chancellery was unexpectedly halted. It later emerged that the intended successor, CDU Bundestag member Fritz Güntzler, had withdrawn his candidacy at the last minute for professional reasons.

Frei suggested that such unforeseen circumstances are difficult to prevent. "The way it has happened now, one cannot honestly rule that out. That can happen," Frei commented. He is scheduled to be elected as the successor to Jens Spahn as the new head of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group next Wednesday.

The shift in leadership for the parliamentary group initiated the current cabinet reshuffling. Chancellor Merz had previously appointed Nina Warken, the former Health Minister, as Frei's successor in the Chancellery. Carsten Linnemann, the current CDU Secretary-General, is slated to take over Warken's role as Health Minister.
