French Ecologists leader Marine Tondelier seeks broad left-wing alliance for 2027 presidential bid

Marine Tondelier, the national secretary of France's The Ecologists party, is extending an olive branch to the entire left-wing spectrum, proposing bilateral meetings to forge a common strategy for the 2027 presidential election. This initiative follows the unsuccessful attempt at a joint primary with the Socialist Party.

Tondelier expressed her readiness to "re-discuss with everyone on the left," extending invitations to parties ranging from La France Insoumise (LFI) to Place Publique, as well as the Communist Party and the Socialist Party. She aims to build a "path to victory" by discussing policy and strategy, emphasizing that her party is open to collaboration without exclusion.

While maintaining her own candidacy for the Élysée Palace, Tondelier outlined key conditions for any potential common project. These include a strong focus on ecological transition, phasing out fossil fuels, establishing a "climate welfare state," ending the pursuit of growth, and constructing a federal Europe that uphms its values of welcome, solidarity, and democracy. She stressed the importance of a shared vision for governing and warned against the risks of division, which could lead to the left's elimination in the first round of the election in many constituencies.

This outreach comes just days before the summer university events for her party, LFI, and the PCF. Tondelier also indicated that discussions would need to address the legislative elections that are expected to follow the presidential vote. She affirmed her commitment to working towards a shared project and stated that her vote would never support the National Rally, positioning The Ecologists as a potential unifying force on the left.
